What makes Temper so unique? And what trends are emerging in the flexible work market?
We spoke with COO/CCO Maarten Zoomers.

Can you tell us exactly what Temper does?
Certainly. Temper is essentially a digital platform for flexible work.
The concept is quite simple: clients post shifts on our platform for which they need temporary help. Freelancers, whom we call ‘FreeFlexers,’ can respond to these shifts based on their interests and availability. Both the client and the FreeFlexer have profiles on our platform, so both parties know what to expect.
After the shift is completed, both parties provide feedback and ratings on our platform. We then assist with invoicing and payment, ensuring that clients have complete insight into who worked for them. In short, Temper connects clients and FreeFlexers for flexible work assignments.
That sounds like a handy system. How long has Temper been around, and which sectors do you serve?
Temper was founded in 2015, and the first shift took place in 2016. We started in hospitality but have since expanded into other sectors such as logistics, retail, and even delivery, with partners. We are the largest platform for flexible work in the Netherlands and have thousands of people working through our platform for various clients.
That’s impressive. Can you tell us more about your international expansion?
Absolutely. Our vision is to become the leading global platform for flexible work. We not only want to be the largest but also lead this new way of working. We want to give people the opportunity to work flexibly because we see that it meets the needs of the new generation of workers.
That’s why we have expanded to England and France. We want to give as many people as possible the chance to work this way because we believe it fulfills the needs of the modern worker.
What do your users appreciate most about Temper?
We often hear two words from our users: flexibility and control. FreeFlexers appreciate the flexibility to choose where, when, for whom, and at what rate they want to work. They also have control over which assignments they take on. On the other hand, clients appreciate the same flexibility because they can choose who they want to work with based on profiles and applications. So, flexibility and control are key aspects of our platform.
Can you tell us more about the needs of the new generation of workers and how Temper addresses them?
We see that the new generation of workers, especially Generation Z, is looking for flexibility and control. They want to decide for themselves where, when, and for whom they work, and they require immediate gratification, similar to the ‘on-demand’ culture. This fits perfectly with what Temper offers. We see that this generation is looking for instant solutions, whether it’s entertainment, ordering food, or grocery shopping. The same applies to work; they want to be able to work instantly when it suits them, and that’s exactly what Temper caters to.
What can you tell us about the role of Finqle in your operations?
Finqle plays an important role in our operations. They understand our user group very well and offer a wide range of services, including invoicing, factoring, and debtor management, all with one provider. This is essential for us because we operate entirely digitally and want to integrate with Finqle’s systems seamlessly. It’s a long-term partnership, and we value their reliability and understanding of our users.
That sounds like a strong partnership. Can you explain why Temper chose to outsource invoicing and payments to Finqle?
It’s a conscious choice. We want to focus on our core activity, which is bringing clients and FreeFlexers together for flexible work assignments. Invoicing and payments are important, but they are not our core business. Finqle specializes in these financial aspects and offers a broader range of services. By outsourcing these tasks to Finqle, we can continue to focus on what we’re really good at and what sets us apart.
What are the benefits for FreeFlexers when working with Finqle?
There are two main benefits for FreeFlexers. First, they get paid faster than if they had to wait for the client to pay the invoice. Second, they gain some security, as Finqle handles the payments and debtor management. This protects them from unpaid invoices. Finqle provides FreeFlexers with both speed and security.
That’s important for freelancers. How does Temper ensure everything runs smoothly with Finqle?
Our systems are fully automated, and we have developed the platform in-house to communicate with Finqle through a well-documented API seamlessly. This digital aspect is crucial for us because we are a fully digital platform. It allows us to work efficiently and without issues with Finqle.
What sets Temper apart from other flexible work platforms?
One of our key distinguishing features is that we don’t interfere in the financial flow between clients and FreeFlexers. We see ourselves as a marketplace where they can find each other, but we are not the middleman handling financial transactions. This gives both parties complete freedom to make their own choices. We want to maintain the core of our platform and focus on what we do best, which is bringing workers and clients together.
Finally, what are Temper’s plans for the future?
Our plans revolve around giving as many people as possible the opportunity to work flexibly in the way we offer. We want to continue growing in the Netherlands and explore other sectors and countries. Our vision is to become the leading global platform for flexible work and give as many people as possible the chance to work this way. We will continue to innovate and strive to keep our users satisfied.
